Who Is Tom Rhys Harries? Meet the Actor Behind Clayface

From The Return to Clayface, meet CUTLER’s autumn cover star.

You may recognise Tom Rhys Harries as Axel Collins, the DJ at the centre of Netflix’s White Lines, or from the Apple TV+ thriller Suspicion. More recently, he appeared alongside Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in The Return, a retelling of Odysseus’s homecoming drawn from Homer’s Odyssey. With the title role in DC’s Clayface, there’s another name to add to that list - and considerably more time in the make-up chair.

Harries plays an actor whose attempt to restore his disfigured face takes a monstrous turn. It’s a substantial studio leading role, with a premise that gives the familiar anxieties of his profession a particularly unpleasant physical form. An actor playing an actor losing control of his own appearance: there’s plenty to get under the skin.

For our autumn cover shoot, the arrangements were rather simpler. We met Tom in London for an afternoon with no stylist, no grooming and no entourage. Just denim, a camera and time to make some photographs. The resulting portrait series accompanies our conversation in the new issue of CUTLER.

“There’s a lot to gain from letting go at the right moment,” he tells us.

It’s an intriguing outlook for someone entering such a significant chapter of his career. How do you prepare for a role that takes you somewhere unfamiliar? What happens to your sense of self when your work asks you to become somebody else?

In the full interview, Harries discusses instinct, identity and the place music occupies in his life. There’s also a quick-fire round, taking us beyond the film set to the things he loves when the camera stops rolling.
